Australian Citizenship

Ready to take the next step? Australian citizenship has many rewards and responsibilities. Citizens have the right to vote and an opportunity to carry an Australian passport and access Australian consular services abroad when in need. The Australian passport is ranked as one of the most desirable passports to have based on ease of visa access globally, international taxation laws, global perception, dual citizenship, and personal freedom.

Citizens are also required to serve on a jury (unless excused) and defend Australia should the need arise. While Australian does allow multiple citizenships to be held at once, some countries do not, and you will need to consider this carefully when considering your application for Australian citizenship. You should contact your home country embassy to learn more about their treatment of dual citizenship before making an Australian citizenship application.

There are different pathways to citizenship:

Australian Citizenship by Conferral

‘Citizenship by conferral’ means that you have been ‘granted’ Australian citizenship based on meeting certain criteria such as:

You are an Australian permanent resident or Eligible New Zealand Citizen

  • You meet the Australian physical residence requirement or have substantial ties to Australia
  • You meet the character requirement (if over 18 years of age)and
  • You intend to reside in, or maintain a close and continuing connection with, Australia.

The citizenship by conferral process has 3 stages:

  1. Lodge a citizenship application with your supporting documents
  2. Attend a citizenship interview and take the citizenship test
  3. Attend a local citizenship ceremony and make the citizenship pledge (children 16 years and younger do not need to attend a ceremony or take the pledge)

Did you know?

Permanent Resident children 15 years and younger and usually resident in Australia do not need to meet the physical residence requirement to make a Citizenship by Conferral application. Additionally, children can be included on a parental citizenship application. In general, applicants 16 years and older must each make their own, separate, citizenship application.

We can help you determine if you may meet the requirements to make a Citizenship by Conferral application. Contact us today for further details.

Citizenship by Descent

If you were born overseas to an Australian citizen parent, you may be eligible for Australian Citizenship by Descent.

Please contact us for further information about the requirements, your eligibility and how we can assist you to make a complete citizenship application.

Evidence of Australian Citizenship

If you are already an Australian citizen and need proof, we can also help you! Let us take the stress out of the process for you. We can assemble and lodge your ‘decision-ready’ application so that you are not further delayed by requests from the authorities.

Proof of citizenship may be needed for certain job applications or an Australian passport application, for instance.

Other pathways to Australian Citizenship

There are other, less common pathways to citizenship that may be available depending on your personal circumstances. If you feel you might have a claim to Australian citizenship, we would be happy to review your situation and provide you with further guidance or assistance to make a complete application for you.

I highly recommend Migration Plus if you are looking to migrate to Australia. They were very helpful and supportive through out the whole process of my visa application specially Dr. Anna Morozov. In fact, I got my partner visa 820 in less than 3 months and now I’m a permanent resident. The follow-up and advises they had for me were very efficient.

I am so grateful for the MigrationPlus team especially Fiona and Mateja, their expertise engaged in overseeing the 482 visa (Labour Agreement) application process from the start to the eventual granting of the visas, for me and the entire family. Very competent and efficient service.

First of all, I would like to say a huge thanks to Mrs Mateja who consulted my case. When I left Australia, I almost gave up to get a permanent visa but I made it now. As an offshore applicant, it was not easy but Migration Plus is very helpful and professional. Absolutely, I suggest the Migration Plus to people who are preparing any visas in Australia.
