Tourist Visa

The Tourist visa allows people to visit Australia for tourism or recreation purposes, or to visit friends and family. It also allows visitors to study in Australia for up to three months. This visa can be granted for single or multiple stays, for periods of up to 3, 6 or 12 months, depending upon the circumstances of the visitor.

Visitors from certain countries may be eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or an eVisitor visa, instead of a Tourist visa. The ETA and eVisitor generally have fewer requirements and conditions than the Tourist visa, as well as lower application fees. Please contact us if you would like further information regarding these visas.

You must:

  • genuinely intend to visit Australia as a tourist, for recreation, to visit family and friends or for other short-term non-work purposes;
  • have access to sufficient funds to cover your costs while you are in Australia;
  • if in Australia at the time of application, you must be in Australia when the visa is granted. If outside Australia at the time of application,you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted;
  • meet the relevant health and character requirements, and provide evidence of health and/or travel insurance if necessary.

If you are under 18 and travelling alone, or with only one parent (or legal guardian), you must also provide written consent from the non-accompanying parent or legal guardian.

If you are applying from Australia as the holder of another Australian visa, you will generally be granted a Tourist visa if you meet the above requirements, have complied with conditions of your existing visa and are not subject to a `no further stay` condition.

Once this visa has been granted it will generally cancel or cease any other visa that you hold, and will come into effect as soon as it has been granted. You will need to keep this in mind if you hold or are applying for any other type of visa.
