Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143/173)

There are two options for contributory parents: either a 2-year temporary visa; or permanent residency.  The choice that you make will depend upon the contribution that you can afford.

These visas are applied for from outside Australia, and are available to the parent(s) of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.  If you are holding a temporary contributory parent visa, you are eligible to apply for permanent residency from inside Australia.

The sponsoring child must have been resident in Australia for at least 2 years and must sponsor or nominate the parent.  An assurance of support will also be required. At least half of the applicant’s children must live in Australia, or the applicant must have more children in Australia than in any other single country.

The most compelling factor is that you must pay contributions to the Department of Immigration & Citizenship (DIAC) in order to obtain this visa.  The contributions payable will depend upon whether you apply for permanent residency or temporary residency, and are as follows:

Contributory Parent Visa (Permanent) Subclass 143 – One Stage Process

DIAC fee - 1st instalment (covers all applicants) $1,995
 
DIAC fee - 2nd instalment/contribution (payable immediately prior to grant of visa)
Main Applicant $40,015
Each Secondary Applicant Aged 18 Years or Older (e.g. applicant's spouse) $40,015
Each Secondary Applicant Aged Under 18 Years $1,730
 

Total contribution for husband and wife:

$80,030

OR Contributory Parent Visa (Temporary/Permanent) Subclass 173/143 - Two Stage Process

STAGE ONE - Temporary Visa
 
DIAC fee - 1st instalment (covers all applicants) $1,995
  
DIAC fee - 2nd instalment/contribution (payable immediately prior to grant of visa)
Main Applicant $24,010
Each Secondary Applicant Aged 18 Years or Older (e.g. applicant's spouse) $24,010
Each Secondary Applicant Aged Under 18 Years $ 1,730

$48,020

STAGE TWO - Permanent Visa

If you make an application for permanent residency as the holder of a temporary contributory parent visa, the contributions will be:

DIAC fee - 1st instalment (covers all applicants) $270
   
DIAC fee - 2nd instalment/contribution (payable immediately prior to grant of visa)  
Main Applicant $16,005
Each Secondary Applicant Aged 18 Years or Older (e.g. applicant's spouse) $16,005
 
Total contribution for husband and wife: $32,010
 

(combined with the contributions that you made for your temporary visa)

$80,030

There is also an assurance of support required for a permanent contributory parent visa.  This assurance is refundable to the applicant after 10 years.
